This looks quite amazing. I’m becoming more and more impressed with what Microsoft is putting out there. Windows 7… Their new phone OS looks pretty interesting… and now this. I could totally use this every day.

In working on building my own content management system, I’ve been learning about various ways to implement storage of the content in a database. This is a great article I found. Check it out.

To sort content in a hierarchy i have rows that have a sort_order column, like the following list.

id, title, sort_order
1, page a, 0
2, page b, 1
3, page c, 2
4, page d, 3
5, page e, 4

My question is when changing the order or deleting content, is it best to keep the sort_order clean without gaps in numbers?  or does it matter?

Clean
1, page a, 0
2, page b, 1
5, page e, 2 – moved up several rows and reordered
3, page c, 3 – the following items are then renumbered as well
4, page d, 4

Gaps (may occur after deleting an item or by just moving an item to the end)
1, page a, 0
(sort_order gap of number 1)
3, page c, 2
4, page d, 3
5, page e, 4
2, page b, 5 – moved to the end and just given a number one greater than the max sort_order number.

The desired affect is still achieved.  I’m just not sure there is any reason to worry about the gaps or not.  Hit me  up on twitter with comments or FB.

Well… finally decided to start working on cleaning up my site and the templates and everything. Be patient..

I’ve finally got almost all the basic score card functionality finished.  You can now manage all the cards in the database.  Delete them… Load an old one to edit and view… create/start a new card.

Along with that I also added a drop down panel when you tap the Score Card header to allow you to edit score card / round settings.  Such as the date of the round and a title / description so the various cards are more descriptive when listed.

The score card manager screen lists each score card by date, displaying the name or date of the match as the title.  It always will display the match date time as well as icons for each of the players that are in the card.  Hopefully this will make it easy to navigate a lot of score cards.  Eventually i’ll also make a drop down selector to only show cards for certain courses and so forth.  That will have to come after I get course data editing/displaying working.

Well.. I played 18 holes today with a bunch of friends and was able to give my app a thorough usability test.  I’ve added a couple modifications to the score entry screen now because of it.

1. A user can now cycle through the holes and players (if there is more than one) from the score entry screen.
2. added a small score board for the currently listed player for easy access to the information.

I may actually add a couple things now as well.. Like a leader board type score screen to show all the players score information more simply and not displaying each holes score on that screen.

Doing some browsing as I’m waiting impatiently for next weeks release of the Palm pre I came across Sprints marketing site for their NOW network and the Palm pre. Interesting idea. Here is their custom widget one can post on their own site.

I’ve had a “fun” couple days trying to figure out how to convert Lat/Long both to and from pixel x/y values. It took me a lot longer than I thought it would. I will post some code in another post, when I’ve had a chance to clean it up and make sure it works properly. What a struggle. Still waiting for the Palm pre to be released so I can officially begin development of my new app.
